Travel Nutrition Series Part 2: Supplements While Travelling
If you missed Part 1, we covered nutrition and supplement strategies for surviving long-haul flights. Read it here!
Now in Part 2, we’re shifting the focus to how you can support your body and feel your best while actually on holiday.
I’m a huge believer in balance. I truly think it’s possible to maintain your health goals, feel good, and enjoy food freely while travelling—without strict rules or restriction.
Naturally, I prioritise nourishing foods most of the time because they help me feel my best. I am however a massive foodie and a big part of a cultural experience is the food.
Over the years, I’ve experimented with different travel habits and fine-tuned a supplement routine that supports me physically, helps fill in nutritional gaps, and keeps me feeling balanced and healthy while travelling!
A Nutritionist’s Guide to Supplements While Travelling
Everyone’s needs are unique, but here’s what I personally take with me on holidays to support three key areas: blood sugar balance & satiety, nutrient support, and gut health.
1. Protein Powder
Starting my day with a high-protein breakfast is essential for me to maintain my health. When I skip protein first thing, I find I’m more likely to ride a blood sugar rollercoaster - which adds unnecessary stress to my body. A high protein breakfast also keeps me satiated, compared to a high carbohydrate breakfast which leaves me ravenous. I love travelling with protein powder because you just don’t always know what options will be available! My favourite protein powder is BePure’s Good Gut Collagen Protein.
2. Prebiotic Fibre
My diet while travelling usually contains less fibre than I’m used to at home. To keep my gut (and immune system) happy and to help regulate blood sugar levels, I always bring prebiotic fibre. It’s an easy addition that makes a huge difference in keeping digestion on track. My absolute favourite prebiotic fibre supplement is from a practitioner only brand Integra Nutritionals ~ FloraGenex.
3. Daily Nutrient Support ~ Good Green Vitality
It is inevitable that I’ll be eating less vegetables and whole foods while travelling. Therefore to cover the nutritional gaps, I usually reach for Good Green Vitality. It helps to supplement my diet with key vitamins and minerals and the added greens are a bonus – when sometimes there aren’t any greens in sight!
All three of these come in powder form, so I usually blend them together in water first thing in the morning. It’s my little daily ritual—a great way to start the day feeling nourished and grounded, even while on the move.
